The Saladillo rojo or
Caraipa llanorum is the signature tree of the Colombian
llanos orientales
or eastern plains. It is flood resistant, fast growing, and provides a beautiful red wood that is
highly prized in Europe. Its cousin, the Saladillo blanco or
Vochysia obscura is not quite as
prevalent, but provides equally good wood. The lumber pictures are Saladillo rojo being cut.
