Local Facts about Vichada
The entire Department of Vichada covers 100,242 km2 with a population of only 97,276 people. A department is like a province or state. Colombia has 32 departments. The capital of Vichada is Puerto Carreño, located between the Meta and El Vita or Bita rivers along the mighty Orinoco, South America's second longest river. Vichada is on Colombia's eastern border, with Venezuela North of the Meta and East of the Orinoco rivers. Vichada forms part of the Colombian llanos or plains. The climate is hot and humid year round, with distinct wet and dry seasons.
One of the plantations we work with is Plantación Amazonia El Vita S.A., located on 2,400 hectares (approx. 5,900 acres) about 1 hour and 20 minutes out of Puerto Carreño by gravel highway. It is located around 06o 05' 51" North and 67o 43' 48" West. The land lies along the banks of the El Vita river. Another plantation is Roncador Forestal S.A., consisting of 3,000 hectares (approx. 7,410 acres) along the Orinoco river. That site is located at about 05o 51' 40" North and 67o 34' 46" West.
